A Homemade Greenhouse – How I Built it Using Greenhouse Plans and Saved My Money

October 15th, 2010 Chip No comments

Hi my name is Chip,

I made this page to tell you about how I was able to build my homemade greenhouse to protect my flowers and vegetables. I’m not exactly a building professional but building a homemade greenhouse was actually easy and most importantly cheap compared to contracting. Now that I’ve got it up all my neighbors are inquiring as to what I did and even relatives from out of town! I thought it would be easier to share my story on this page and show people how I saved money building my own greenhouse. Learn how I did it.

homemade greenhouse project

Just this past April I was in the middle of preparations for the growing season. I had starting planting some in the end of March and was well under way with germination. I had some good sprouts and the Sun had been out warming everything without a touch of cold for weeks. I woke up the morning of April 3 and I will never forget. The frost covering the ground looked like hell had frozen over. It pretty much was like that for my little seedlings. I had lost everything I had planted thanks to this snap frost Mr. Weatherman didn’t anticipate. The ground had been a great temperature for the seedlings until this point.

I was devastated. I had some close calls before and lost a bit but this time was the last straw. I was NOT happy at all. I was sick of not having more control over my grow season. The weather here can be a bit tricky but I hadn’t been wiped out before. I immediately started looking for a greenhouse to take care of this once and for all.

homemade greenhouse guide

I Used This Guide To Build My Homemade Greenhouse

I found lots of places offering snap together kits but they were all pretty bland looking once I had done some research. Not to mention, they were about 5 times the cost of the materials. A $1000 greenhouse I could buy from Home Depot I could have a homemade greenhouse for $250. My mind was made up as to what to do.

At this point I had a vision of what I wanted and where I wanted to put it but found I needed to know more. I was no expert on greenhouse ventilation or heating. I wanted to know what it would take to grow year round. Long story short I wasted time with designs that didn’t have any other information with them as to how to ventilate them or how much heating they would need. I found a really perfect site called Greenhouse Plans that gave me all the info I needed.

After I bought the guide I had the plans I needed plus I had all the planting tips for greenhouses that are important to getting the most of it. My neighbor Sam came over as soon as I was finished to “borrow” the guide to get started on his own project. And let me tell you, having twice as many plants in previous years is so wonderful. My wife Karen really appreciates that I can grow her nice flowers all the time too. I’d still be gambling with the temperate climate around here if I hadn’t taken matters into my own hands with my homemade greenhouse. That’s why I wrote this page.

This site will explain all you need to know better than I ever could so take a look.

I hope this helps you! (it sure helped me)

The Structure of Gardening on a Budget- Homemade Greenhouse

September 20th, 2010 Chip No comments

First time I have decided to build a greenhouse, there were a lot of options to choose from. The cost is certainly a problem, since the intention of building more than a. If you want to have a greenhouse in your account, you are probably considered many of the same options as I do, also how to save money while doing it.

A home greenhouse was my reaction to a solid structure to support the growth of the plants and save money at the same time. It could be the right answer for you.

These are the options I suggest you stay away from:

Rebar and assets plastic sheeting and supported with rocks and soil. This is not a property or a permanent structure and is not appealing at all.

There are commercial devices that cost between $ 5,000 and $ 15,000, with almost everything, except the foundation. Yikes! That is to grow vegetables and flowers a lot of money.

These are the options I suggest you carefully to your greenhouse to be attractive, functional, would, during, and help the hard-earned money in your pocket

Convert the shed or dependence in a greenhouse. This represents new life into an old building that a candidate could be for the demolition. It can do a lot of cleaning, building and remodeling, but it may well give new life to an old building, has a much better use. Restrictions that can be studied are: the amount of demolition and modifications that are necessary for a greenhouse effect and its orientation towards the sun, its size and space, their location and need for structure, if necessary. In addition, there is water and electricity within or in proximity?

The construction of a new wood construction. The wood is strong, lightweight and easy to operate. It is also relatively cheap. Books on the wooden structure and plans for greenhouses “DIY rooms” abound, and the sun, so there is a wealth of examples for the construction of its success. Restrictions that can be studied are: poetry and painting is necessary to protect the wood from moisture, the wood selection is important, curves, arcs and distorted parts that a major challenge will be to use and eliminate tire nail guns are a necessity if you want the ease of construction.

Building a new structure of steel tubing. I have chain link fencing top rail tube with good results. Steel pipes resistant to decay, there is no need to be painted and assembled simply with easily available materials. It is also easily accessible to almost every hardware and DIY markets. If you build a classic style and shape and size of a single garage, you can embed the ends of the wooden framed to make it easier to install vents and fans. For large structures, you can build a pipe bending machine and a lodge style or Hoop house makes optimum use of the natural force of a semicircle. Restrictions can be studied: infrastructure projects such as the commercial production of the tube wall requires a lot harder to help the extra effort to supermarkets, steel pipe arch, more support is needed to prevent bending of the tubes under the snow and wind, and special saws, band saws and machining technology is a necessity for the construction of the facilities.

Whatever you prefer structure; I suggest you use UV-treated polyethylene film coatings for easy installation and low cost. My use of a substance greenhouses Ripstop polyethylene film which is very difficult, almost impossible to break, and moved easily.

If you take up your time to planning and construction of your home greenhouse, you have a structure used, the quality of life is. You have to know the satisfaction that you built it yourself for much less by a commercial kit.

Announcement: Tips To Save Money When Building Your Own Homemade Greenhouse

homemade greenhouse plans2 Announcement: Tips To Save Money When Building Your Own Homemade GreenhouseTips on saving money when building a homemade greenhouse. Materials can be expensive but they don’t have to be.

1. For your frame whether wood or PVC pipe go to a big do it yourself retailer. They are going to have some of the lowest prices around for a PVC or wood framed greenhouse. Don’t expect to find anyone knowledgable about greenhouses at these places though. If you have done your research you will know exactly what you need and how much. Doesn’t hurt to get a couple extra pieces just in case of a mistake. Find out how to start building your own homemade greenhouse.

2. Your covering or glazing material is also going to be found cheaply at a do it yourself retailer. The cheap way to go is heavy plastic wrapping around 8 mil transparent. It’s very inexpensive but easy to work with holds heat well. If you are in the market for a bit more sturdy material you can get fiberglass panels at these retailers. Glass is the top level but is expensive and can break.

3. To get the door you want on the cheap you might have some luck online with Craigslist. Sometimes people are getting rid of old stuff like this for pennies. Another place is the junkyard. A little bit of looking around can save you a hundred dollars.

Is it really possible to save money on a homemade greenhouse and still get good performance? It’s not true that you have to build a super expensive greenhouse to get the benefits. Some people see the kits at those retailers or on the web adn they are indeed very expensive. Also contracting it out is even more expensive than a kit because the work is all custom and usually pricy by the hour. You really don’t have to lay down tons of cash for ultra modern materials to get a good homemade greenhouse. They have been built like this for a long time.

The truth is that a good design and plan for your greenhouse is going to go a lot farther than money will. You can be super successful on a shoestring budget because you have more information than someone who just buys a big kit on a whim. You can have the most expensive materials available and it won’t perform as nice as a $100 greenhouse built in the best winter sun location. It’s all about knowledge of how greenhouses work and laying them out properly.

Don’t be discouraged because the amount of info you really need to know is small and is worth the research. You need to be willing to spend a little time with some good plans that are accompanied by solid greenhouse growing information and you will be growing on the cheap year round.
